Scott says farewell to Billy
    ()

RUTHERGLEN actor Scott Kyle is saying farewell to his most famous character after over three years.

blrgr200409scottkyle-12.JPGThe play Singin' I'm No a Billy He's a Tim has catapulted Scott into the public eye since he first took a chance on it in 2007.

But he will perform as Rangers-daft Billy for the final time on April 29th, with the play's writer Des Dillon wanting to take the show on himself.

It will be an emotional farewell for Scott, whose theatre company No Limit People snapped up the anti-sectarian piece about three-and-a-half-years ago.

Back then they had no idea what a phenomenon it would become across Scotland, and beyond. They recently performed it in front of 3000 people at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow.

The popularity of the play has also seen two extra dates added to Scott's final tour with it, including two at Rutherglen Town Hall on April14th & 29th, and one in Hamilton on 15th April.

During the time he has appeared in it, Scott has drawn praise from politicians, including the last two First Ministers, for tackling such an important subject. And he even picked up the best actor award at the Edinburgh Festival last year.

Although he will be sad to see his association with the play come to an end, he knows it opens doors for new opportunities in the future. In fact, he was at Rutherglen Town Hall to launch the Christmas panto, Aladdin, which he will take to the Town Hall as well as Hamilton.

He said: "We just played the Armadillo in front of 3000 people; it's incredible how far we've come.

"Des wants to do it himself, and I think that's fair enough. It's a cracking play and a spectacular piece of writing.

"I said I no longer wanted to be in it as I wanted to try other things. It's like in Romeo and Juliet... you can be Romeo but you don't want to be him for the rest of your life."

But Scott admits he will miss the play, as well as the character he portrayed.

Scott has helped develop Billy throughout the years, and in fact based his performance on people he knew.

He said: "He's an amazing character but it's time to pass the baton on to someone else.

"There is a feeling on stage that I'm saying goodbye when I say certain lines.

"I get people coming up to me, even Celtic fans, and they say they recognise the way Billy celebrates a Rangers goal by shouting all the bigoted stuff.

"The character is based on people I grew up with.

" It's a mix of three guys so he's a real life character. I've taken different qualities from all of them."

Scott is now focussing on putting on a great Christmas panto, even this early in the year.

He said: "Hamilton especially is a massive venue, with around 700 seats. There will be a lot of effort and graft going into this."

Edinburgh Festival proves success for local actor

Thumbnail image for me and award.JPGThe Edinburgh Festival proved a huge triumph for a local Rutherglen actor who was awarded the top acting accolade at the festival. Scott Kyle, from Rutherglen, beat off stiff competition and was awarded the best actor award by Stage Magazine which is a much coveted award at the festival. The competition was stiff, but Kyle won the top prize for his role in 'Singin' I'm No an Billy, He's a Tim'.

He celebrated his award, presented to him the evening before his final performance of the festival, and was still feeling the effects as he took to the stage for the final time. In his celebrated role, he plays a Glasgow Ranger's mad fan, Billy, although Kyle discovered it was not as easy to perform the part after a night of jubilant celebrations.

The world famous Edinburgh festival is a very busy time for print companies offering poster, flyer and banner printing as many shows go all out to stand out from the crowd, and Kyle hopes that the success of the play will help raise interest in other performances that his production company is running. He may also be calling on companies offering poster printing in Edinburgh as the production company changes their advertising posters to incorporate the positive message that the 'Billy and Tim' show practically sold out every show at the Edinburgh Festival which is a massive pull to audiences and a huge achievement at an event with around 2500 shows.

Scott Wins Best Actor Award
    ()

A Rutherglen actor and director has triumphed at a prestigious Edinburgh Fringe awards bash.

me and award.JPGScott Kyle, 27, was named best actor at The Stage Awards for his role as Rangers supporter Billy in Des Dillon's Singin' I'm No A Billy He's A Tim.

The former supermarket worker beat thousands of other actors to be shortlisted for the award.

He was working at Safeway when he saw the script, which tells the tale of a Celtic fan and Rangers fan locked in the same jail cell on an Old Firm match day.

They toured the play around the UK with Scott's No Limit People Theatre Company, set up to give work to jobbing actors, and received a standing ovation in Belfast.

The Stage Awards were announced at Dance Base in Edinburgh last night

"The Scottish Government is totally committed to tackling sectarian bigotry regardless of how it manifests itself, and I wish the tour continuing success.  I would like to thank the artistic director, Scott Kyle, and all those involved in the production for their important contribution to overcoming sectarianism.  By working together we can create a One Scotland of many cultures in which the blight of sectarian bigotry is banished once and for all."

"I would like to congratulate NLP Theatre Company on taking the initiative to challenge sectarianism by performing this great play. I am sure that the performances will make a real impact on every audience and will help challenge the sectarian problems still facing Scotland today. Given recent incidents, it is important to continue the battle to isolate those with out of date and dangerous attitudes. NLP Theatre will help build this movement through this production."

Best wishes
